Detecting Various Indoor Gas Pollutants on a Single Sensor Chip
The SGP41 is Sensirion’s new VOC and NOx sensor designed as digital smart switch and regulation unit for air treatment devices such as air purifiers.
The two sensor signals processed by Sensirion’s powerful Gas Index Algorithm can be directly used to automatically trigger the removal of indoor air gas pollutants by air treatment devices without the need for user–device interaction. This sensor solution is thus well-suited for constantly monitoring the VOC and NOx situation including potentially harmful events which are not perceived by humans. Furthermore, an automatic control of air treatment devices based on the SGP41 signals helps to save energy by turning them off once the VOC and/or NOx events have been taken care off. SGP41 offers a solution for two complete sensors on a single chip facilitating design-in and saving design costs. Thanks to its very small DFN package (2.44 x 2.44 x 0.85 mm3) the sensor can be designed into applications with limited spaces. SGP41’s multi-pixel sensing element features an unmatched robustness against contaminating gases which are present in real-world applications enabling unique long-term stability as well as low drift. Sensirion’s state-of-the-art production process guarantees high reproducibility and reliability. Tape and reel packaging together with suitability for standard SMD assembly processes make the SGP41 predestined for high volume applications.

Air Purifiers Equipped with SGP41 Help to Remove Harmful Gases
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) are harmful gases that are produced during combustion processes by indoor appliances, such as gas stoves, and outdoor emissions, such as car exhausts. Exposure to even small amounts of NOx over a long time can irritate and damage the human respiratory tract and result in long-term health effects.
Advanced air treatment devices equipped with the right filter enable the removal of NOx from indoor environments, in addition to the removal of other pollutants like VOCs, PM2.5 or formaldehyde. The chart is based on a typical room in an apartment where an NOx event has been triggered. The gray bars visualize the trend in the amount of NOx without ventilation or treatment by an air purifier, while the green bars show the reduction of the NOx level achieved with the use of an air purifier. With the help of Sensirion’s SGP41 VOC+NOx sensor, air purifiers are able to monitor the NOx situation at all times and can regulate the device automatically thanks to the digital smart switch feature.
Start Evaluating the SGP41 Today
The SEK-SVM4x evaluation kit has been designed for easy and cost-efficient evaluation of Sensirion’s SGP40 VOC and SGP41 VOC+NOx sensor. The kit contains the SVM41 sensor module and is equipped with an SGP41, an SHT40 humidity sensor and a microcontroller featuring VOC and NOx Index, relative humidity and temperature outputs via either an I2C or UART interface.
In addition to the SVM41, the SEK-SVM4x comes with a UART-USB cable that allows for evaluation of the sensors, e.g., by Sensirion’s easy-to-use SEK-ControlCenter viewer software as well as a 6-pin jumper wire cable that enables fast prototyping, e.g., through integration into existing platforms (like Arduino, RaspberryPi, etc.).
Unique Performance Thanks to MOXSens® Technology
The sensing principle of the SGP is based on a heated film of metal-oxide (MOx) nanoparticles. Adsorbed oxygen on the metal-oxide particles reacts with the target gas and thereby releases electrons. This results in a change of the electrical resistance of the metal-oxide layer that is measured by the sensor.
The SGP multi-pixel gas sensor platform integrates four sensing elements − the pixels – into one small DFN package. Using Sensirion’s CMOSens® Technology, the SGP offers a complete sensor system on a single chip featuring a digital I2C interface, a temperature-controlled microhotplate, as well as preprocessed and calibrated indoor air quality signals.
Optimized metal-oxide sensing materials in combination with Sensirion’s multi-pixel gas measurement platform result in a unique resistance against contamination by siloxanes – MOXSens® Technology. Sensirion’s MOXSens® Technology enables highly sensitive and reliable gas measurements of indoor air pollutants such as volatile organic compounds and hydrogen.
