David Pustan has worked as a Packaging Engineer at Sensirion since 2011. Previously, he studied microsystems engineering at the University of Freiburg and gained his doctorate at the Laboratory for Assembly and Packaging Technology. So he already became acquainted with sensor technology and packaging during his studies.
The first packaging project in which David took part after starting at Sensirion was for the humidity and temperature sensor SHTC1. David developed an optimal housing for the sensor that protects the sensor chip and allows it to be contacted, while simultaneously enabling access to the measured humidity on the sensor surface of the chip. He dealt extensively with the design, materials and production processes for the housing, and was even in the laboratory to test materials and build prototypes. With the transfer of the manufacturing processes to the process engineers, the project was finished internally. Now David had the exciting opportunity to take part in the technical external production. From late 2012, he was in Asia regularly for several weeks at a time. He assisted in setting up the manufacturing processes and enhanced the product's producibility. In spring 2013, David successfully completed his involvement in the project with the start of production.
When David started at Sensirion in 2011, the company had around 200 employees. Over the years since, he has been a front-row observer of the company's growth: "Today we have almost three times as many people," he says. Thanks to that growth, the starting point for his next development project, the multi-pixel gas sensor SGPC10, was very different. Whereas he had previously tinkered and worked in the laboratory himself, now there was an entire department of experienced process engineers. This shifted the focus towards planning and organizational activities, such as coordination with the process engineers for the production of prototypes and final process optimization.
Like our products, David's career evolves as well: he has been Senior Packaging Engineer since late 2014. With this position, David took on greater responsibility and duties and now advises colleagues within and outside the group using his acquired expertise. There are always new technical specifications or concepts related to the packaging of new products that have to be worked out on an interdisciplinary basis.
It is precisely this variety and scope to use his own ideas that I appreciate in particular about working at Sensirion.
Furthermore David has the chance to take responsibility for new, technically demanding projects. The practical aspect of his work remains an important factor for him. This is where he has the opportunity to create something and hold a product that he has imagined or designed himself in his hands. It was a great feeling for him to see 'his' humidity sensor sell so successfully.
Apart from the stimulating and diverse nature of the work itself, David also appreciates the good working atmosphere within his team and the entire company. All his colleagues are very helpful and he can always find someone to answer his questions. Everyone is always involved in the work of fellow team members as well, because no one focuses solely on his own work. Everyone communicates with and assists each other.
