Matthias Rüegg is studying mechanical engineering at ETH Zurich and recently completed his bachelor's degree. Before moving on to his master's studies, he wanted to gain some work experience - and opted for an internship at Sensirion.
Matthias is doing his internship in Sensirion's Mobile department and is part of the group responsible for developing applications. He is involved in several projects from different areas, working on new applications for the mobile devices market. This includes conducting a range of different feasibility studies. The first step is to elaborate application scenarios for our sensors in mobile devices or wearables, for example in a smart watch. The feasibility of those applications is then tested in subsequent field studies. Matthias and his team have also set up additional tests; for example, checking the air quality in rooms (indoor air quality). To do so, Matthias and his colleagues placed multiple sensors in meeting rooms and offices. The sensors measure the temperature, humidity, and the CO2 and VOC content of the air. The information is used to check the functionality of the sensors, implement further developments and develop use cases. This exciting and varied work enables Matthias to play an active role in the development of new sensors and help shape a market with a very promising future. As he does so, he is often able to apply knowledge which he acquired at university. But that's only one aspect of his work, which is highly interdisciplinary and covers a huge range of subjects, making it interesting and full of variety.
Many different skills and capabilities are called for, such as the ability to communicate well or pick things up quickly. The team, too, is just as varied as the work. The different capabilities of his colleagues and their practical and theoretical specializations complement each other perfectly. As a member of the team, Matthias is always in the thick of things - not least thanks to his workplace. That's why it's also his favorite place at Sensirion, because it means that he's fully integrated in the team and always has someone he can approach if he has a question. So Sensirion provides him both with useful guidance and strong interaction with his colleagues. He works with employees from a wide range of departments and and gets around a lot in the company. Matthias truly appreciates the open, friendly and helpful atmosphere at Sensirion.
Important factors in Matthias' internship are a multidisciplinary mindset, independence and curiosity to learn and develop new things. Halfway through his internship, he's pleased with the results so far:
I like working in development and I think it's great that the people at Sensirion are so driven.
He would definitely recommend an internship at Sensirion. With a bit of self-motivation, the opportunity is great: "If you are driven to achieve, you'll go far here."
