Multi-Pixel Gas Sensor SGP
The multi-pixel gas sensor SGP opens up new possibilities for the measurement of indoor air quality. The long-term stable metal-oxide gas sensor features multiple sensing elements on one chip providing in-depth information on air quality. The SGP gas sensor is based on Sensirion’s multi-pixel platform, which integrates four gas sensing elements into a very small 2.45 x 2.45 x 0.9 mm3 DFN package featuring a fully calibrated air quality output signal.
The unprecedented combination of long-term stability and multi-pixel technology opens up new possibilities for environmental monitoring in smart home, appliances and Internet of Things applications. Thanks to its unique performance, the SGP allows the integration of metal-oxide gas sensors into mobile devices.
Traditional metal-oxide gas sensors suffer from poor long-term stability including a rapid loss of sensitivity and a strong increase in response time. This degradation is caused through irreversible contamination by certain chemical compounds like siloxanes which are ubiquitous in real-life applications due to their widespread use in consumer products and production environments. Indoor Air Quality and Volatile Organic Compounds
People spend 90% of their time indoors where concentrations of gaseous pollutants are significantly higher than outdoors. The widespread use of new products and building materials, as well as improved insulation for energy efficiency, has resulted in increased
concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs originate mainly from paints and solvents, carpets and furniture, and cleaning agents, and are also emitted by humans. Elevated VOC levels can have a negative impact on well being, comfort, and cognitive abilities. Exposure to high levels of VOCs can be avoided or significantly reduced by regular ventilation, air purification and removal of strong VOC sources.
The Total VOC (TVOC) concept has been established as a practical time and cost-effective method of surveying indoor environments for contamination. Sensirion’s multi-pixel gas sensor SGP enables measurement of TVOC levels and thus helps to increase the efficiency of ventilation and air purification, and increases awareness of VOC sources and indoor air pollution.
