Life Sciences, Diagnostics and Analytical Instruments
Smart sensor solutions are developing rapidly. They play a key role in the development of the life science, diagnostics and analytical instrument markets, and lead to more cost-efficient systems and processes.
The automation and optimization of processes and devices is enabled by smarter systems, machine learning and ever-increasing amounts of data. These developments are partly driven by leaps in sensor technology, which, for example, enable online liquid flow measurements down to single nanoliters per minute. With Sensirion's sensor solutions, real-time data on environmental and flow conditions can be used as the basis for optimization. This creates more robust systems and processes, enabling applications to be managed by a broader range of professionals.
In addition, specific therapies are made possible by the interaction of several modern technological developments. One such example is how quality of life can be drastically improved by personalized medicine. Sensirion offers solutions for monitoring processes in a myriad applications including DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, in vitro diagnostics (IVD), blood screening, liquid and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and thermal analysis.
Use Cases
- Flow cytometry: In these devices, cells flow past an analysis unit (e.g. voltage or fluorescence read-out) at high velocity. The recorded voltage or light signal depends on the shape, structure, size and/or color of the cells. This way, cells with the desired properties can be identified and isolated using cell sorting technology. With Sensirion's liquid flow sensors, the process flow rates can be monitored in real time.
- DNA sequencing: The DNA sequence can yield information about genetically determined diseases, enabling a specific prognosis on disease progression and assisting with appropriate therapy design. The high accuracy required in DNA sequencing can be achieved by monitoring the instrument with Sensirion's sensor solutions.
- Chromatography: This method allows complex mixtures of substances to be separated. Chromatography is used in the production, quality control and development of substances for applications in forensics, the pharmaceutical industry and food production, for example. Sensirion's gas flow controllers allow for the precise monitoring and control of gas flows present in these systems.

How developments in the automotive industry can predict the future of chromatography
Since the invention of the car in 1885, leaps in sensor technology, safety and automation have limited the technical interaction of the driver with the car. A similar trend is revolutionizing chromatography applications. Smarter systems, machine learning and ever-increasing amounts of data create new possibilities to automate, reduce unplanned downtime and predict maintenance schedules, thus widening the customer base to include a wider spectrum of professionals, not just specifically trained scientists.
A large portion of these developments are enabled through smart sensor solutions, where Sensirion is a valued partner for life science, diagnostic and analytical applications. Read the complete specialist article.
Modern medicine has been able to drastically improve the quality of life of the global population. Diseases such as polio, syphilis, tuberculosis or the plague have been almost eradicated and are successfully treatable or curable. The next milestone for modern medicine is personalized medicine. This novel discipline does not target the broad population, but focuses on the individual for the diagnosis and beyond. Personalized medicine takes the individual's disease pattern, the patient's constitution and gender and the resulting implications for the therapies and medicines into account. The overall goal is to create a therapy tailored to the individual that can, if necessary, be adjusted and fine-tuned according to the disease progression. The combination of a plethora of modern technologies is required to enable such specialized treatments. As such, a tailored cancer therapy could be designed using flow cytometers, DNA sequencing and organ-on-a-chip applications. Read the complete specialist article.
