Innovations and other news
Dear reader,
Sensirion has asserted its pioneering role once again and opened up a large field of new application possibilities with innovative chip-scale packaging for humidity and temperature sensors. Some creative applications of sensor technology in smartphones were recognised in the Sensirion App Challenge. The current liquid flow sensors are also setting new standards with their size and technology. In the R&D Note at the end of the newsletter, you can get an insight into gas flow sensors in medical ventilators.
We wish you an entertaining and interesting read.
Environmental sensing for a smarter life
Sensirion is presenting its latest humidity and temperature sensor SHTW1, which opens up new possibilities in the wearable and mobile market with its chip-scale packaging technology. This innovation combines minimal size with maximum performance to define the latest generation of humidity and temperature sensors, enabling unprecedented opportunities. Sensirion creates space for new ideas - there is no limit to the range of possible uses of the tiny SHTW1. Read more...
Incredibly small liquid flow sensors
Sensirion has announced the new liquid flow series LPP10 and LPG10 in an unsurpassed small size. The new technology is based on planar microfluidic substrates and the sensors are available with a glass or a plastic packaging. Both versions have a footprint of a mere 10 x 10 mm. The glass version is extremely durable, while the plastic version is more suitable for disposable applications. The sensors have no moving parts and no obstacles in the flow path of the fluid. Plug and play with Sensirion's liquid flow sensor
With the Liquid FlowMeterKit from Sensirion, it's easy to perform measurements with a liquid flow sensor. The kit contains everything necessary to get initial results within 10 to 15 minutes. And to clear up any last questions, it also includes a short training video on installing and putting the liquid flow sensor into operation. Here's the training video.
Sensirion App Challenge
The Sensirion App Challenge came to a close in January. We were looking for innovative ideas for mobile applications using integrated humidity and temperature sensors in a smartphone. The best three entries were presented at Sensirion's headquarters in Stäfa. The jury selected the 'Isolation Doctor' entry as the winner. It uses a smartphone to analyze poorly insulated building areas and provides useful tips on how to fix the problem. In addition to the prize of a smartphone or tablet, the winning team also gets the chance to be involved in making their idea a reality. Once it has been developed, the app will be available free in the Google Play store.
R&D Note: Gas flow sensing technology in medical ventilation devices
Medical ventilation technology has made rapid progress since the invention of the "iron long" about 80 years ago - the first device used for patient ventilation. Along with pressure sensors, flow sensing technology and gas flow sensors play a significant role today. The original iron lung used negative pressure to achieve patient ventilation, but modern devices use positive pressure in the patient's lungs for this purpose.
