The Future of Self-Empowerment in Medicine
"Transforming the future of self-care." This is the mission of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The global healthcare company develops innovative products to improve the well-being of patients. By actively building strategic partnerships, it aims to create a breakthrough in the way users treat their own health. Sensirion has also been involved in medical technology for years to help patients feel better and be more independent. For example, an internal innovation team monitors the perspiration rate. Constant perspiration, i.e. the evaporation of water on the skin, produces a gradient of absolute moisture that is proportional to the perspiration rate. With two correctly arranged humidity and temperature sensors, it is possible to measure it accurately.
How does this help patients? Older people in particular are susceptible to dehydration because the water content in the body decreases with increasing age. As a result, more than half a million patients a year end up in hospital and cost about one billion US dollars. But perspiration rate measurement also offers advantages for other applications: activity, mood (stress, anxiety) or sleep monitoring, as well as measurement of skin moisture. For athletes, it may also be critical how much fluid they lose during exercise and how this correlates with performance. The application allows patients to independently inform themselves about their state of health and take responsibility for it. With this innovation, Sensirion took part in the GSK challenge in the field of digital health and established itself as one of the five winners. The aim of the challenge was to jointly advance the mission and create new opportunities. Read more about the challenge and sweat rate measurement.
