Application note: prevention of biofilms
Sensirion's liquid flow sensors are based on a microthermal measurement principle. The integrated microchip is bonded to the outside of the flow channel wall of the sensor and is therefore media isolated. Any deposit or layer of a substance that was not present during the factory calibration has a negative effect on the sensitivity of the sensors and the overall performance. A biofilm is a possible reason for this.
The formation of a biofilm in water bearing systems is influenced by the initial contamination, temperature, water parameters, availability of nutrients and the way the water system is operated. Below are some test setups that have been proven effective for evaluating Sensirion's liquid flow sensors:
- If possible, use a sterile medium, e.g. sterile water, for your test measurements.
- Use e.g. an alcohol-water mixture to thoroughly clean your fluid system regularly after use.
- Always store the sensor in a clean and dry flow channel after completion of your measurements. To do this, always drain the liquid, rinse it with suitable solvents or cleaning agents and blow it out with dry air or allow it to air dry.
